Imo: Group Condemns Attack On University Don

A civil society group in Owerri, the Imo State capital, has roundly condemned the attacks on a senior lecturer in the Department of History and International Studies of the Evan Enwerem University, Owerri, Dr John-Cliff Nwadike. The group, the Centre for Peace, Sustainable Human Rights, Ethical Values and Development, said the attacks on the said don were not unconnected with his favourable disposition and voiced support for the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the just concluded governorship elections in the state.

The attack, which began as mere verbal vituperations and vilification of the person of Dr Nwadike, finally culminated in the snatching of his car, a red coloured Honda CRV Jeep (Reg. No. LR 527 AAA; Chasis No. JHLRD2840WC005575; Engine No. B20443040117) at Atta in Njaba Local Government Area of the state on May 14, 2011 by unknown hoodlums.

The group further said that no person, no matter how highly placed, has any right to vilify, attack, assault or threaten any Nigerian for exercising his/her fundamental human rights as enunciated in Chapter IV Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

It would be recalled that in the height of the tension created by the guber elections in Imo State, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had turned violent and employed every arsenal within their reach to intimidate every person perceived as opposition, including character assassination, vilification, threats, and sometimes outright personal assaults. However, their schemes failed as their principal, Ikedi Ohakim, was convincingly defeated by the APGA candidate, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.
